10/30 English 2 Agenda

Sneeze:

Faber mentions that there are three things that a society needs in order to grow.  To you agree with him or not, and why?

  1. The novel, Fahrenheit 451 begins: “It was a pleasure to burn.” Why does Ray Bradbury start the novel in this way? Why might it be more pleasurable to burn books rather than read them?
  2. In the opening scene, why are the books compared to birds.
  3. Discuss the difference between Montag and Clarisse’s lives.
  4. Montag’s television includes headphones called “seashells.” The “wall to wall circuit” allows Mildred to enter the “play” and, therefore, the television programming. How does the technology within the novel compare to our current technology? In the first pages of the novel, does technology improve the quality of life for Montag and his wife, Mildred? Why or why not?
  5. Consider why the narrator introduces us to Montag at this time of his life, when he encounters Clarisse and confronts Mildred’s overdose.
  6. Why does the author introduce the character of Clarisse before Mildred? 7. Why are all the houses fireproof in this society?
  7. Why does Mildred require emergency service? What service is provided?
  8. What is the mechanical hound and what is its purpose?
  9. Why does the society consider Clarisse “anti-social”?
  10. When the woman’s house is raided, why does she light the match?
  11. Describe the relationship between Montag and Mildred?
  12. Discuss Captain Beatty’s view expressed in his monologue that school cultivates anti-intellectual sentiment. In your opinion does it accurately depict your high school?

Timeline and summary work for “The Black Cat”

Sample summary:

In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connel, hunter Sanger Rainsford washes up on the shore of an island owned by the wealthy General Zaroff. Rainsford sees evidence of someone hunting large game on the island. Zaroff claims he has been importing game for his hunts.  Soon, Rainsford realizes that Zaroff has been hunting humans for sport. Next, Zaroff informs Rainsford that he will be hunted for the next three days. If Rainsford survives, he will get to live.  As a result, Rainsford hides deep in the woods, where he sets several traps to outsmart Zaroff. Eventually, Rainsford jumps back into the sea to escape. Rainsford then sneaks into Zaroff’s quarters and kills him, turning the tables on hunter and prey.

Turn ordinary animals into monsters that prey on humans: dog-sized rats, killer rabbits, or a pack of rabid mountain lions. Give the animals intelligence and set them loose.

Next we filled out a questionnaire on a partner in the room.  We took notes on not only what the answer was, but how they answered it (for example, body language or hand gestures).  All students were instructed to answer in complete sentences.

Students were then instructed to write a monologue based on their partner.
