3/18/19 English 1 & English 9RCP

You may work in pairs or alone. No, you may not work in threes. Failure to follow instructions will result in a zero for every group member. Read the following poem and get out a piece of white printer paper. Fold the paper in half long ways and then fold that paper into equal threes. Write your name and period on the back.

If the sub cannot find my printer paper, there is a box of it located on the bottom shelf of my big blue cabinet.

For each stanza (poetry paragraph), draw a visual depiction of what YOU believe the stanza is trying to communicate. Neatness, creativity, and work put in count. They always count. Due at the end of class. Turn into sub.

Be respectful, be kind, and be productive. We will complete presentations Wednesday.

Caged Bird

BY Maya Angelou

A free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wing
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn
and he names the sky his own

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.
