Tone v. Writing Style in Notebook

Shmoop Video on Tone Notes:

Tone – the attitude the author has about the topic he/she is writing about

Mood – the way a reader feels while reading

Writing Style – the way in which something is written (ie word choice, order of sentences, sentence structure, punctuation, etc.)

Objective tone – used when a writer wants to deliver information in a neutral, factual and unbiased way. Objective tones can be achieved by avoiding personal pronouns, judgmental words that may indicate personal feeling and emotive words that indicate an opinion on the part of the writer.

Subjective tone – perspective is one open to greater interpretation based on personal feeling, emotion, aesthetics, etc.  Author’s opinion; biased.

Pass out “Hip Hop Planet” article and tone word list.  Instructions:

  1. Read the article and determine what tone the article has (one only). Write a sentence or two at the end of the article explaining why.
  2. Complete your FIVE annotation steps.
